Charles W. Bryant, born enslaved in Kentucky, was one of ten Black delegates to the Texas Constitutional Convention of 1868-1869, representing Harris County. This is a letter he wrote to Freedmen’s Bureau agents in 1867 about the need for a school on a plantation between Hempstead and Bellville.
