An 1869 article announcing an early Juneteenth celebration to be held in Houston’s Lockhart’s Grove (also known as Lubbock’s Grove). I think this particular event took place elsewhere, but what’s clear already was the effort of local celebrants in Texas to spread the holiday far and wide, and to teach its significance.
